A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

by
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart

(Musical)
June 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 2008.
Directed by J. P. Parrella
Musical Director: Don Kawash
Meet the Cast

After the great success of Nunsense, we had to do another musical quick! Here it is!- an exuberant bawdy, funny musical, by the most successful compose-lyricist of the last 40 years, Stephen Sondheim. It is Sondheim with his tunes at their catchiest and his lyrics at their wittiest before excess artiness came on the scene. Loosely based on plays by the Roman comedy playwrights Plautus and Terence the plot is funny nonsense set in the Rome of 200 BC. Two young lovers, a crafty slave seeking his freedom; a bombastic general; a lecherous father of one of the lovers and his henpecking wife and courtesans aplenty, all make for a hilarious group of performers. As the show says---Tragedy tomorrow---Comedy tonight.

Directed by Christopher Wunder
Meet the Cast

We begin a terrific season with a chilling thriller. Rhoda Penmark is the dream child for many parents. Pretty, bright; she has impeccable manners and her behavior never causes the slightest problem for her loving parents or for other adults who regard her as a paragon. In truth, Rhoda is totally amoral with absolutely no sense of right or wrong. Without conscience, she removes any opposition to her will by any means, up to and including murder. The death of a fellow student starts a chain of suspicion pointing to Rhoda and the realization of Rhoda's involvement slowly comes to her horrified mother. The agonizing suspicions grow as Rhoda deals with others who cross her will. Suspense also mounts as do the thrills, and the gripping conclusion will leave you stunned.

The warmth and humor of the play may rub off on you, and you may find a little April enchantment under gray November skies.

(Comedy)
January 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25.
Directed by William Peterson
Meet the Cast

A delightful, sophisticated comedy which maintains its heart while gently satirizing an age of greater faith. It is 1250 at a monastery in Priseaux, France. The monks do their good works for the local people supported by donations from those who pray for the intercession of Saint Foy whose relics are in their chapel. Unfortunately, no miracle attributable to St. Foy has occurred for 13 years, and revenue has fallen to the point where the monks themselves are almost starving. On top of this, a rival convent claims it has the actual body of St. Foy and pilgrims are flocking there including a visit from the Pope. A very ingenious method is hit upon to restore the monastery's pre-eminence., and it balloons far beyond the monks' intention. Come see what their solution is and come see a warm but provocative comedy that is far different from the usual.

A comedy-drama you will love by the creator of TV's Happy Days. Wrong Turn is the story of an intellectual, bitter college professor and the saucy, street-wise young woman who volunteers to read to him in the hospital. How these two people form a tenuous friendship is told in wonderfully warm and often hilarious scenes. Complicating matters are an exasperated nurse, a thug of a boyfriend and an attempt at blackmail. At its heart, Wrong Turn at Lungfish is a funny and poignant play about the blind leading the blind and ultimately seeing the light.

Meet the Cast

We end this remarkable season with a Tennessee Williams classic. Set on the Mississippi gulf coast among a colony of Sicilians, it is a rollercoaster of emotions propelled by the volatile Serafina DelleRosa. She is the widow of a virile magnetic truck driver who was killed in a fiery crash. She has turned her home into a shrine to his memory. She has also let herself go physically to the embarrassment of her teen aged daughter with whom she is very strict. Now, great changes are coming. The daughter has met a young sailor. A mistress of her adored husband challenges her total belief in his faithfulness; and a muscular, un-bright but amorous truck driver arrives at her door. The powder keg of emotions ignites and hurdles along with earthy humor, and in the end with the re-emergence of Serafina into life. This is Williams in his prime with laughter, lust and a gripping story all in one play.
