Meet the Cast

Helen Keller has been an inspiration for the world for almost 120 years. This is her story, and even more perhaps, that of the indomitable young Irish girl, Annie Sullivan, who, half blind herself, with love, firmness and utter determination reached into the mind of a blind, deaf little girl and brought her into the world she was never to hear or see. This play won the Tony for itself and for its star, Anne Bancroft and went on to garner Oscars for Bancroft and for Patty Duke. William Gibson is factual in his writing and incorporates the conflict of strong wills and even manages to find a deal of humor as the wills of teacher and reluctant student collide. Helen's family is also very important; her faithful mother, stern father and troubled half-brother. All this comes vibrantly to life as we watch a woman who would become great emerge from the deep shadows where she might have stayed but for the courage of her selfless teacher.

ALMOST, MAINE

by John Cariani

(Comedy)
November 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 2009
Directed by Barbara Pease Weber
Meet the Cast

This is a delightfully different comedy about falling in and out of love; of the unexpected occurring and of what is figurative, becoming quite literal. In a small, remote town in northern Maine, it is mid-winter and the northern lights are in all their glory. Various couples seem changed and magical things happen. You will see an actual broken heart; see people really fall in love before your eyes, and be able to witness love being measured by the bagful. If Shakespeare has his Midsummer's Night Dream, the town of Almost Maine has its enchanted, joyous, wistful and hopeful midwinter one. Come and be entertained and captivated by wondrous goings-on on a frosty night.

THE LONESOME WEST

by Martin McDonagh

(Comedy-Drama)
January 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31, 2010
Directed by William Peterson
Meet the Cast

Martin McDonagh is arguably Ireland's finest living playwright. He has had a string of wonderful, shocking black comedies such as The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. A few years ago we presented a very successful production of his The Beauty Queen of Leenane. This play is another part of a very loose trilogy of plays which take place in the real hamlet of Leenane in northwestern Ireland. Their chamber of commerce may not be too happy with them because they have a gallery of unforgettable characters, few of whom are admirable, but all of whom are wildly individual, cantankerous and sometimes deadly. The humor is all-pervasive and it is all black. The cast consists of two middle-aged brothers who live together and loathe each other and their attempts to best, and indeed to off each other. Also involved are a salty young girl and a sincere but ineffectual young priest. If you like your comedy off-beat, this is for you.

THE COUNTESS

by Gregory Murphy

(Drama)
March 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 2010
Directed by Helga Krauss
Meet the Cast

Scandal among the famous is far from new. In the 1850's there were few more glittering names than John Ruskin, the art critic, essayist and arbiter of public taste and Everett Millais, a brilliant painter and co-founder of the pre-Raphaelite school of painting. These young men had risen rapidly in fame and reputation and were allies. Ruskin was married to a beautiful young woman and the three of them went to Scotland for four months so Millais could paint Ruskin's portrait. During that stay, the friendship ended and the unhappy marriage unraveled. Behind this was an unspoken secret that would come to shock Victorian society. This play is accurate in all its essentials . It is fast moving and engrossing as the actions and reactions of three talented and passionate people play out. It will keep you involved from start to finish.

Meet the Cast

The Sycamores are a clan of blissful people who enjoy life and do their own thing. Presided over by the benevolent Grandpa Vanderhof, they seem to have some source of income that keeps them from the clutches of the depression that rages outside. Martin's daughter writes unpublishable plays; her husband dabbles in fireworks. Their daughter, Essie is a talentless ballerina and her husband prints political tracts. Their other daughter, Alice, loves them dearly but has a 9 to 5 job as a secretary on Wall Street and is romantically involved with the boss's son. One memorable night, her boss and his wife are invited to dinner and arrive on the wrong night when every pastime is in full swing. Federal agents also arrive to inquire as to why grandpa has never bothered to pay income taxes. Everything comes apart and everyone winds up in jail including a stray grand duchess, an out-of-work actress and a down at heels ballet instructor. This play has been a staple for guaranteeing uproarious laughter, so prepare to laugh 'til you cry.

Continuing the parade of laughs, we present a play written by the husband and wife team of Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna, who previously wrote the hilarious Lovers and Other Strangers. Two elderly women are placed by their caring daughters into a retirement community in Las Vegas. There they are bored, depressed and subject to self-pity. Into their lives comes a senior rake and con man who gradually insinuates himself into their lives, bank accounts and bedrooms. He also brings back to them a zest for living and a kind of unwitting menage a trois takes place. The transformation of the women and the reformation? of the man provide a joyful romp as a new springtime supplants late autumn for the rejuvenated ladies.
